Why Are Green Spaces Important?

Green spaces, from urban parks to expansive forests, play a crucial role in promoting human health and well-being. Scientific research has consistently highlighted their benefits, making them an essential part of sustainable urban and rural planning.

The Benefits of Green Spaces

A study in The Lancet Planetary Health (2018) found that living near green spaces reduces the risk of premature mortality by improving cardiovascular health and encouraging physical activity (Nieuwenhuijsen et al., 2018). Similarly, exposure to natural environments has been shown to lower stress levels and enhance mood, with a review published in Frontiers in Psychology linking green spaces to reduced anxiety and depression (Twohig-Bennett & Jones, 2018). Green spaces also contribute to cognitive restoration, as suggested by Kaplan’s Attention Restoration Theory (Kaplan, 1995), which demonstrates how spending time in nature can replenish mental fatigue.

On a societal level, green spaces are essential for sustainable urban and rural planning. They mitigate urban heat islands, improve air quality, and provide habitats for biodiversity, as detailed in a study by the European Environment Agency (2019). These multifaceted benefits make green spaces indispensable to urban and rural development strategies aimed at enhancing quality of life and environmental resilience.

FTHub’s Standard for Healthy Green Spaces

The Forest Therapy Hub (FTHub) has taken significant strides in defining the essential characteristics of healthy green spaces. Their 2022 report, Standard of Essential Characteristics of Healthy Green Spaces, outlines the criteria for evaluating whether a green space is suitable for Forest Bathing and Forest Therapy practices.

This report, based on research conducted in 21 countries with the participation of 107 Forest Bathing and Forest Therapy professionals, identifies core attributes such as ecological diversity, accessibility, and tranquility. These standards are designed to help organizations—both public and private—assess and verify green spaces for health and well-being activities. The full report is available on the FTI Lab by FTHub page.

Why This Matters

Green spaces are more than just beautiful environments—they are indispensable for our health and the planet. By adopting standards like those developed by FTHub, we can ensure these areas remain effective venues for promoting well-being through nature connection and sustainable practices.
