Urban Forest Bathing: How to Connect with Nature in the Middle of the City

Forest Bathing is often imagined in remote forests, far from traffic and urban density. Yet for millions of people, daily life unfolds in cities where access to large natural areas is limited. Urban Forest Bathing emerges from the possibility of reconnecting with nature without leaving the city behind.

Forest Bathing is a nature-based wellbeing practice that supports healthier adaptation to stress and change through intentional sensory immersion in natural environments. The practice works through slowing down, engaging the senses, and allowing attention to shift away from constant cognitive demand.

In urban contexts, this can happen in parks, botanical gardens, riversides, tree-lined streets, or even small green spaces integrated into the city landscape. The scale of the forest matters less than the quality of presence.

Research shows that exposure to urban green spaces is associated with lower stress levels, improved mood, and better cognitive functioning (Berman et al., 2008; Bratman et al., 2015). Even brief contact with nature can help reduce attentional fatigue and support emotional regulation.

How to Practice Forest Bathing in the middle of the city?

Urban Forest Bathing is less about location and more about pace and perception.

Simple practices include:

  • walking slowly without a fixed goal
  • putting away the phone during the experience
  • noticing sounds, textures, light, and movement
  • pausing near trees or water
  • breathing more consciously
  • allowing moments without multitasking

Guided Forest Bathing sessions support participants deepen sensory awareness and strengthen nature connectedness through Nature Connection Activities offered in a carefully designed experience.

The objective is not productivity, exercise, or escape but to integrate nature in our lives. In cities, nearby green spaces are not secondary alternatives to “real nature.” They are often the most accessible and sustainable way to integrate restoration into everyday routines.
