By the end of this course, you will be able to design and facilitate a structured, evidence-informed nature contact protocol that supports clients presenting with anxiety or low mood, calibrated for clinical, healthcare, and counseling settings.
Outcomes
What you'll gain
- Design a differentiated two-phase nature contact protocol for clients presenting with anxiety, depression, or mixed presentations, applying the FTHub 5 Components of Nature-Based Interventions framework.
- Apply two evidence-anchored mechanisms in your session design: rumination interruption through externally directed attention, and behavioral activation through graded low-demand engagement.
- Word verbal cues that point attention outward and calibrate the stillness phase to a client's arousal level, while holding the screening threshold and referral route that keep the protocol within facilitation scope.
- Communicate the evidence base and the scope boundary to primary care physicians, social-prescribing link workers, and clinical colleagues using a one-page evidence summary and three pre-session communication templates.
- Evaluate your protocol design against a 12-criterion self-assessment rubric before first delivery, and adapt it across presentations, environments, and group sizes using the FTHub Liquid Interactions Model (LIM, FTHub 2021).
Audience
Who is this course for?
-
Therapists: add a structured, mechanism-anchored nature contact protocol to your existing therapeutic work, with the framing language and scope boundary that keep it credible alongside your primary modality.
-
Counselors: offer your clients a low-demand, repeatable outdoor practice that supports rumination interruption and behavioral activation between sessions, with cues and pacing calibrated to the predominant presentation.
-
Healthcare workers: integrate a defensible, evidence-informed nature contact protocol into care pathways and social-prescribing referrals, with the communication templates and evidence brief to share with referrers and commissioners.
-
Recommended prerequisite: Course 4-1 Trauma-Sensitive Nature-Based Practice. Recommended for all Theme 4 courses; especially relevant where anxiety or depression has a trauma history.
Course Framework
Course structure
Experience first, then evidence, then application, then commitment. The module structure is the product.
0Orientation
- Course overview, the single capability the course develops, and the scope boundary that keeps the work safe
- How to use the course: experience-before-theory sequence, practice log discipline, screening, and referral route
- Baseline self-assessment, professional intention setting, and the practice log template you use across every module
1Foundation
- The Rumination-Interruption Walk, the core experiential practice, performed before reading the evidence
- Reflection on the practice in your own attention, mood, and observed sensory shifts
- Why nature contact reduces rumination, and what this means for cue wording and site selection
- Behavioral activation, green exercise, and the approximately 120-minute weekly nature-contact benchmark
2Deep Dive
- How anxiety-predominant and depression-predominant presentations differ in arousal and motivation
- Applying the FTHub 5 Components of Nature-Based Interventions framework to your protocol design
- Extended two-phase practice introducing the behavioral-activation phase alongside rumination interruption
- Mapping the protocol against your professional context: clients, environments, dose, and constraints
3Application
- An annotated worked example of a 50-minute protocol for a low-mood group, with full design reasoning
- Designing your own differentiated protocol for your client group, presentation, and environment
- Running your design as a self-rehearsal on the actual site you will use with clients
- 12-criterion self-assessment rubric for a delivery-ready protocol
4Integration
- Synthesis of the two mechanisms, the differentiation, and the scope boundary
- Final reflection compared with your Module 0 baseline self-assessment
- Thirty-day action plan with three specific, dated commitments, including delivery, communication, and adaptation
- What I Learned competency checklist across four domains: Perceptual Practice, Conceptual Understanding, Facilitation Skills, and Professional Design
