By the end of this course, you will be able to design and facilitate a structured expressive arts session that uses intermodal decentering to support reflection and self-regulation for your clients in outdoor and indoor natural settings.
Outcomes
What you'll gain
- Facilitate The Gathered-Materials Response, a structured outdoor practice that moves participants from a non-representational arrangement of found materials into a single contrasting-modality response.
- Apply the principle of intermodal decentering and the low-skill, high-sensitivity standard to design expressive tasks that reach reflection without requiring artistic skill.
- Plan an outdoor session container before its content, with defined edges, sightlines, consent, opening, and closing, drawing on the 5 Components of Nature-Based Interventions.
- Design and self-assess your own 30-, 60-, or 90-minute session for a named client group using a structured rubric and the FTHub Method for nature connection activities.
- Communicate the evidence base for expressive arts outdoors to clients, referrers, and colleagues using ready-to-use briefing templates for clinical, educational, and outdoor or tourism contexts.
Audience
Who is this course for?
-
Art therapists: Extend an established arts-based practice outdoors with a structured method, a defensible container, and protocols that respect clinical scope.
-
Creative coaches: Add a reflective, evidence-informed expressive tool to your sessions, which reaches material that verbal reflection alone reaches more slowly.
-
Educators: Translate outdoor learning goals into a structured expressive practice with the documentation needed for safeguarding, consent, and stakeholder communication.
-
Prerequisite: You already work directly with clients, participants, or groups, and are qualified for your population. This is a continuing professional development (CPD) module, not a certification.
